A metal string stretched between two fixed ends will vibrate and produce a sound when it is plucked, as illustrated in Figure 1.

To investigate how sounds are produced, a student used strings constructed of either steel, aluminum, or an unknown material. String of differing lengths, radii, and materials were stretched with various tensions between fixed ends. When plucked, each of these strings produced a sound of a specific fundamental frequency (pitch). The results appear in Table 1.
