A tropical depression is a weak storm that forms over warm, tropical ocean waters. A tropical depression that strengthens may become a tropical storm, which may, in turn, strengthen further and become a hurricane. Hurricanes produce heavy rain, high winds, and storm surges (a flood of ocean water). Table 1 shows the sustained wind speeds of the 3 types of storms. Table 2 shows how a hurricane's central air pressure, wind speed, and storm surge height correspond to hurricane Intensity ratings 1-5.
