Table 1 lists the conditions necessary for a population to remain in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE).

If a gene has 1 dominant allele and 1 recessive allele only, the relative frequencies of these 2 alleles are typically represented by p and q, respectively. For example, if Gene A has 2 alleles (A and a), the relative frequency of A = p and the relative frequency of a = q. For a population in HWE, genotypic relative frequencies then occur shown in Table 2.

Table 3 lists 9 hypothetical populations, 1 gene each population, and some of their allelic and genotypic relative frequencies. Some populations in Table 3 are not in HWE.
