When 2 substances are combined to form a mixture, various properties emerge that are different from those of the original components. Table 1 lists the mass, volume, and density ( mass divided by volume) of mixtures of powdered sucrose and powdered sodium bromide at 25°C, and the masses of the substances that were combined to form the mixtures. Figure 1 shows how mass changes with volume for powdered sucrose and powdered sodium bromide at 25°C. Figure 2 compares the final volume of various ethanol-water mixtures to the initial volumes of the 2 pure liquids that were combined to form the mixture at a specific temperature.
