When substances are heated, they typically expand (increase in volume). Under certain circumstances, some substances will contract (decrease in volume) when heated. Table 1 shows the change in volume that occurred when 1.0000 L samples of solids at different initial temperatures were heated. Tables 2 and 3 show the results for similar trials using 1.0000 L samples of liquids and gases, respectively.
